Choosing a perfect wedding photographer is a difficult feat to achieve. We understand you have a lot of questions running through your mind. What if the photographer does not match my aesthetic? What if they miss crucial moments as they occur? Will they take the right shots at the right time? If you are feeling overwhelmed, we have some tips for making sense of it all.
Ask Around
Finding a good photographer can be hectic, but not when you try the conventional method – word of mouth. There is a big chance you went to a friend’s wedding and afterward loved their wedding album they showed you. Do not be shy to hit them up and ask them about their experience. Odds are your friend will have the same style and budget as yourself.
Homework is Necessary
Browse local listings, read reviews on the internet, interview newlywed friends, and finally make a list of potential photographers. Now, go to their websites and check out their portfolio of the weddings they have covered. It will give you a fair idea of what they can do bring to the table. Keep other factors in mind as well, such as:
- How do they capture special and emotional moments?
- Does their website say anything about their sensibility and personality?
- Is the response positive on their social media platforms, and how has the photographer responded to criticism?
- Do they seem personable and friendly?

Take a Glance at their Full Wedding Albums
People make a huge mistake when they base their decision on seeing a photographer’s album’s highlights. As a marketing tactic, some of the photographers showcase the best work on their portfolio. So, what you are seeing is the best of the best.
Technically, there is no problem with it. Still, to be sure, you have to cover all aspects while choosing a wedding photographer. You need to get a well-rounded idea of what you are getting yourself into. As a solution, ask the photographer to show you two to three full galleries from the covered events.
As a result, you will get a fair idea of how skilled the photographer is and how well they can execute the photography. If you see that the full-gallery photographs are just as good as the one shown in the highlight gallery, you’re in safe hands.
BONUS TIP: Once you feel like you have the ‘right’ photographer, make sure if they have covered events in similar settings to yours. For instance, if you plan a wedding inside a chapel with little to no light, you might want to line up your questions regarding it.
