How to Get Your Kids to Cooperate during Family Photo Session

Let’s be honest here. It is quite an uphill task to get the kids to cooperate with you in a family photography session. We have photographed innumerable families, and after years of experience, we finally know what it takes to get your kids’ attention during family portraits.

Disclaimer: We do not take 100% responsibility that our tips will work. But, let’s be optimistic here. If you manage to find a solution, please let us know. Although we hardly think there is any solution to it.

At Bright Focus Photography, we know how sensitive it is to make the moms like the pictures of their families. We don’t worry much about the dads because chances are, it is happening against their will.

So, without further ado, let’s see what the fuss is about. We have made a small list of what to do and what NOT to do during a family photography session.

What to do

Before kicking-off the family photography sessions, you can do either one of the below things to get your kids to cooperate with you.

Full tummies

Most of the family photography sessions, in our experience, are scheduled just before dinner. It can be a little tricky for kids with empty stomachs. We highly suggest giving your kids something to eat (if you plan to go out for dinner afterward). A healthy snack might keep them energized for an hour-long session.

Give them their favorite toy

Is it Superman or Batman? Is it Garfield or Simpson? Whatever it is, hand your kids their favorite toy. It will help them stay busy during the shoot and alleviate their stress. A little price to pay if you want your child to remain composed.

Bribing helps… sometimes

It is totally all right if you want to bribe your children. We see parents do it all the time and gives them a clear expectation about how you want them to proceed with the photography session. Even if they get off the track, you can always remind them about the time when the deal was in mind. You could bribe them with anything – be it candies, stuff toys, video games, or even a dollar. Why? Because kids are easy to place.

What not to do

As we said, we are optimists, so the list of don’ts may not be that big.

Don’t scare them

You have to keep things light. To do that, the last thing you want to do is scare them badly. Don’t threaten them that I will punish you. Instead, politely ask them to behave like a good person. Speak the language of love with your children.

Don’t scream at your kids

When you scream at your kids, it takes a toll on them, and they become more stubborn. There is a big chance that your child will feed off from your emotions, and later on, they will feel upset if you scream at them. So, it is not a good practice to yell at your children before, during, or after the photography session. It fends off their interest in you.

Conclusion

You see? It was not as complicated as you thought it was. If you follow our tips carefully, you can achieve the unachievable (no pun intended). Furthermore, if you are searching for a US-based photography team of professionals, you are luckily at the right place at the right time.
