Are you sick of freezing up the moment you get to a photo shoot and can’t remember what kind of poses you wanted to do? Well, at Bright Focus Photography, we’re here to teach you some simple and effective posing tips for senior boys.

In our photography career, we’ve had to learn along the way that there are some poses that go really well with boys.

Stay tuned all the way through to the end of the blog post to find a special treat for you.

We promise to have you entering your next senior session feeling confident and at ease with our posing tips and tricks. So, we’re just going to get right into it.

Top-model posting system

We just want you to think simple when thinking of posing. As a photographer, the one thing that you need to make sure you do is to make your senior guy look his absolute best feeling confident, so we like to use something called the topmodel posing system.

What this means is that you’ll keep your senior guy in one stance. After that, you can vary everything else up so you might keep him in one stance for three to five different poses. It could be whether turning his head a certain way, moving his arms a certain way, looking off a certain direction, or maybe even changing the expression of his face.

Ease them a little

Make sure to ease the senior guys a little because they’re actually a lot more nervous than the girls usually are. Let them know ahead of time that they’re going to be standing in a pose for quite some time.

So, just let them know and tell them you are going to pose. They don’t have to worry about how to pose naturally. You’re going to put their hands where they need to go. You’re going to tell them how to do everything.

However, one thing that we really like to do with our senior guys and girls for that matter is we like to actually model the pose for them so they can see what it looks like from our perspective. Furthermore, a big thing to do at any photo session, but especially with senior guys, is to encourage them.

So, when they look good and they’re doing a good job, make sure to let them know what all this looks so good.

“Oh my god! I love this pose. You look so dapper!”

Just keep talking that way the entire time because that’s going to relax them and give them confidence.

Make them laugh

Other things we do sometimes is we just try to make them laugh because it relaxes them. We sometimes know who the names of their girlfriends, so we’ll mention their girlfriend’s name and that gets a really good smile on their faces. So, there are lots of ideas that might encourage them and help them relax.

1. Manage how they stand, sit, and walk

It is important to figure out what your seniors would be doing in each stance. So, let’s figure out and sift through each step carefully.

Consider their standing style

You need to figure out if you’re going to have your senior guys stand with a straight or lean body. In short, you need to see what would be their natural stance while standing? You want the guys to have their shoulders width apart and one foot to be slightly in front of the other.

Another thing you want to make sure is that their shoulders are square to the camera, because for boys, it looks a lot better than slimming them. It allows them to show their broad shoulders.

Adjust how they pose while sitting

If you want your senior guys to get the best photographs while sitting, this section is for you.

There are a few different things that you could do for this purpose. You could have them sitting and leaning against a wall. If not that, you could have them sitting on the edge of a chair or a bench.

You can also go for one leg out and one leg in. You could have one knee tucked under the other leg. You could even have one leg up on a knee or up on a chair or the ledge of something.

Whether it be a curb or a brick wall, those are some different ideas for sitting poses.

Track their walking style

We are done with the standing and sitting styles. Now let’s proceed to how a senior should walk during photography. Just make sure when they are walking, your camera has the right settings to track fast movements.

2. Let the hands and arms do the talking

You have now decided what the senior boys are going to do when they stand or sit. The next thing you’re going to do is you’re going to figure out what are their arms and hands going to do.

So, some of the things their arms could do is they could put their hands in their pockets. You can vary it up like they could grab their forearm, they could lean their arm against something, or they could have their arms crossed.

Always think what we could do with their arms. So, those were some things that you could do with your arms. So, now what about the hands? We ask that question because there’s quite a bit that you can do with the hands once you have the base stance figured out.

Your fingers could be running through your hair or they could be grabbing your chin. You’d be surprised to know that there are hand models who get paid a lot only to show their hands. So, we have a lot of scope here.

Final words

It is crucial to get into the right pose for your big day. While circumstances may not allow you to be your best-self due to low confidence, but with these tips, you can get the best out of yourself. Oh, and you might be thinking we forgot about the surprise. Well, not so fast!
